Free eCommerce software??

There is no such thing as “free” eCommerce software. Period.

You pay for it somewhere. Either through increased hosting costs or, given that it is a hosted solution (you don’t own the source code) the moment you make mention of functionality changes you can pay through the nose.

If you are considering delving into the exciting world of eCommerce, there are a few things you should consider. Before you rush out and get a price from the first 5 providers you that come up in a Google search, establish a list of functionality that:

  1. You need now;
  2. Will need in future; and
  3. May need in the future.

Straight away you will remove so many potential providers simply b/c their solution doesn’t stack up. You can save yourself significant headaches (and money) by taking some time from the project outset to get these details documented.

DO NOT:

  1. Select an application based on promises, if it doesn’t do what you want it to do today, then it may never;
  2. Select a solution based on price until is has ticked all the functionality boxes; and do not
  3. Choose a solution from a one-man band or a company with limited history. The chances of them being around tomorrow get slimmer by the day.

Good luck. If you get this right you are well on your way to being successful with eCommerce..
